    39. Litters of piglets - Litters of piglets

Interbreeding means you can have many different litters of piglets with as many different characteristics.
When they grow, piglets become pigs. The piglets are placed into pens according to their date of birth. You can add some straw or duckboards (one per litter) for their comfort the same way you'd do for an adult pig.

Piglets inherit their parents' genetic characteristics (fat level). This makes them more or less responsive to different types of food. They'll put on more or less fat as they grow. To complete your assignment, you're asked to supply pigs with a specific fat level but also with a specific weight.

    All about fat levels:
    Example:
The base fat level of a litter of piglets is 28%.
You feed the litter a bag of sunflower which has a 0.3% fat index.
The litter will put on 28% of 0.3%: its fat level will increase to 28.08%.
For the following feed, it's still the base fat level that's used i.e. 28%.
So if you feed the litter sunflower again, the fat level of the litter will increase to 28.16% and so on.

All the piglets living in the same pen gain or lose weight and body fat the same way. For instance, you can't feed just one piglet in particular: you have to feed all the piglets in that pen.
When 3 piglets in the same pen are sick, you have to treat all the piglets in that pen. The same goes for their cleanliness.

    Well-being:
To ensure your litter's well-being, you must make sure they have enough space. Just calculate the size of the building in which the piglets live according to the number of piglets you have and then increase it appropriately. Depending on the room you allocate them, they'll be more or less healthy. The ideal surface is 0.76 sq.m. per piglet. If you want them to be comfortable, it's the bare minimum.
Before each birth, you must make sure the size of your livestock building is appropriate, or your piglets are likely to choke to death pretty quickly.
Warning: if your building size is under or equals 0.2 sq.m. per piglet, all the piglets of the next litter will perish!
You can increase the surface of your building at any time, but note that there's a minimum waiting period between two consecutive alterations. You can also reduce your building size.

    Older litters:
Piglets are not destined to remain piglets for the rest of their lives. So you must complete your assignment fairly quickly.
After 90 days, the litter is considered 'mature'. It gets sick more often and starts costing you more money.
After 160 days, the litter dies of a heart attack. That's old age for you!

    PUREBREDS (no interbreeding):

Purebred Duroc, Basque Black and White, Large White and Meishan litters without straw and duckboards.

Purebred Duroc, Basque Black and White, Large White and Meishan litters on duckboards.

Purebred Duroc, Basque Black and White, Large White and Meishan litters on straw.

    MIXED-BREEDS:

Duroc/Basque Black and White. Base fat level: 29%.

    Duroc/Meishan. Base fat level: 32%.

Duroc/Large White. Base fat level: 38%.

Large White/Meishan. Base fat level: 40%.

Large White/Basque Black and White. Base fat level: 37%.

Basque Black and White/Meishan. Base fat level: 31%.
