    37. Inseminating a sow and interbreeding - Inseminating a sow and interbreeding

When you buy a sow, it's actually still a gilt. You need to care for it (feed it, treat it, clean it) properly for 23 days before it becomes a proper sow. After 23 days, it is in heat for the first time. This lasts for 2 days. This is when you need to inseminate it.

You must choose the breeding boar you will inseminate your sow with according to your assignment. Interbreeding has an effect on the number of piglets the sow will farrow and on their fat level. Sometimes not all of the piglets of a litter are alive when the sow gives birth. The dead piglets are called "stillborn". If your sow is over 160 days old, the risk of having stillborn piglets is increased.

The life cycle of a sow:
    - starts by being a gilt for the first 23 days
    - is in heat for the following 2 days
    - is in gestation for 10 days if it was inseminated (otherwise this stage is skipped)
    - rests for 3 days
    - is in heat for 2 days
    - etc.

A 230-day-old sow can no longer be inseminated. You need to sell it and buy a new one.

    Lean/fat levels:
The following chart shows the impact interbreeding has on the piglets' lean and fat levels. Indeed the lean and fat levels of the sows and breeding boars are passed on to the piglets.
In blue, you have the fat level, whereas in red you have the lean level.

Once inseminated, your sow is in gestation for 10 days. After which time, it farrows. The newly-born litter of piglets is placed in your livestock building.
Careful! If you don't increase the size of your building first, your litter will die! You must do it before the sow gives birth.

During the gestation period, a small image of a breeding boar is shown next to your sow to remind you of the breed you chose to inseminate your sow with:
